Home Energy Rating Services provides new construction verification and performance certification for ENERGY STAR^©  ratings. 

New Construction

We work with builders and their subcontractors to make each new home the most energy efficient and comfortable.  We use proven building science to ensure each new home visited qualifies as an ENERGY STAR ^©home. 

Energy Modeling

            We will assess from your actual construction plans the expected results in our testing based on specific information including mechanical equipment (furnace or heat source and water heater data), square and cubic footage of the home, number of bedrooms, as well as other necessary factors.

HVAC Systems

HOME ENERGY RATING SERVICES will certify your new HVAC system for maximum comfort and energy efficiency.  Each system is tested according to RESNET standards prior to certification.

Once the required visits and steps as well as the computer data are completed, the builder will receive a packet from Home Energy Rating Services containing an Energy Rating report which is the final report of the analysis of the home’s efficiency.  Included is a Home Energy Rating folder with detailed information about the specific energy saving features of the home, data about the pollution emissions reduced, end use loads, building information including the shell and mechanical systems, an action report charting estimated annual heating and cooling costs, and a breakdown of the component consumption.  Also, an ENERGY STAR^© certificate signed by the director of the ENERGY STAR^© residential program as well as the director of ENERGY STAR^© for new homes.  This information can be used to enhance the future value of the home as well as to assist in energy efficient mortgage qualification.

New Construction - ENERGY STAR^©

Home Energy Rating Services provides new construction performance certification for ENERGY STAR^© ratings.  We are available for consulting and training throughout Southern and Central Indiana as well as Southwestern Ohio.

Energy Ratings:
A home energy rating is a standard way to measure the energy efficiency of a residential home. An energy rating considers home characteristics such as air and duct leakage, insulation levels, window efficiency, wall-to-window ratios, the heating and cooling system efficiency, the solar orientation of the home, and the water heating system. These factors influence the score each house receives on a standardized scale that is based on a national energy code. This score determines whether a house is an ENERGY STAR^© home.

Energy ratings benefit home buyers by allowing a comparison between the energy costs of new homes. A rating can benefit an existing homeowner by providing a specific analysis of cost-effective energy improvements. Builders can benefit from energy ratings by analyzing what materials and building techniques add to or detract from the energy efficiency of a newly constructed home. Builders can also apply for a tax credit on every house they build if it meets certain energy criteria.

In addition, for qualifying homes, a tax credit of up to $2,000 is available for the builder through 2011.

        To qualify, there is a mandatory two step process: 

• The first step is to have a Thermal Bypass Inspection prior to drywall, after insulation has been installed. 

• The second is a final field test with requirements established by the Energy Star^© program.

Additional Builder Assistance inTraining

We train industry professionals (HVAC, Insulators, Framers, Builders and homeowners) on proper energy efficient construction with energy savings in mind.  We offer seminars to groups that want to know how to make homes more energy efficient.  We are available for consulting and training throughout central and southern Indiana as well as southwestern Ohio.
